To play safely at the cabin, you need to be vaccinated against TBE. Tick-borne encephalitis, or TBE, is a virus that involves the central nervous system. Yuck. If you would like to know more about this unpleasant disease, you can visit the Center for Disease Control’s site at: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/Spb/mnpages/dispages/TBE.htm
On the CDC’s page, they list that while there is a vaccine for TBE, it is not available in the States. Another yuck. Thankfully, the vaccine is available in Canada. The travel clinic was wonderful, although trying to get an appointment was a bit of a hassle. (Or so I heard…Michael was kind enough to make the appointment.)
The nurse was also kind enough to wrap up my second vaccine dose to take home to the States. That was the easy part – the hard part was getting back in the U.S. with the vaccine. At the border crossing, I declared my vaccine, and we were then “flagged”. This meant that Michael and I had to head inside the station and speak to an agent regarding my vaccine. The agent asked us a few questions, took our passports, and headed out to the car to have a look for himself. After a few minutes, the agent returned and told us we were ok to head on our way. We then thanked the agent and made sure that we were ok to go. He replied that we were ok to go, “according to Google.”
