While all of the Swedish-speaking Finns were visiting the states, I was given the opportunity to ask what I deem as difficult Swedish grammar questions. (Don’t think that I’m a terrible hostess…this was after the crayfish/schnapps visar party.) What I got to find out is that time is difficult to talk about in Swedish, [...]

If you’re like me and you’re STILL attempting to learn Swedish, you need to have a little levity while studying. Here are some fun words I’ve either heard in conversation or have been taught over the past few weeks:
Pigg: Looking alert or spirited. (One of the only times you’d ever want [...]

This is a posting to say sorry to the five people that still read this blog. Ever since we got home, it’s been a weird “time travel,” trying to get back on a schedule. That, and I planned a trip to visit my Mormor and my Parents less than a week coming back. Ick. [...]

Woot! Nine-ish days to go! (-ish because it’s nearly Thursday.) Oh my goodness, I’ve already got the jitters, the nervous stomach, and the anxious energy. When will the fourteenth get here? Ugh!
Because we’re getting closer and closer, I keep trying to figure out what words I’ll need but don’t yet know. Found these for the [...]

I’m loving a site published by the Stockholm School of Economics. They’ve got chapter after chapter of wonderful language and vocabulary for students of Swedish. I’m making new and improved flash cards!

Ha ha ha…funny me. Going back to my last post, where Michael told me to “feed him” in Swedish, yet “kill him” in Spanish, I went looking for more coincidences. Bad, bad turn. I should have known better. I recalled all of my high frequency Spanish verbs, and came up with nil for Swedish. I [...]
Odd Coincidences…

It’s been amazing learning a new language. I keep finding coincidences, if you should call them such, between Spanish, English, and Swedish.
This weekend, Michael grabbed his stomach and yelled to me, “mata me!” Yikes! The first thing I thought was, “why is he asking me to kill him?” Mata me, in Spanish, means “kill me”. [...]
Vad är det för fel på er?

The title of this blog is taken from one in my Swedish textbook. It has “Vad är det för fel på er?” in bold, and beneath it in English it reads: What’s the matter? Geez….I can only pick out a few of those words and know what they mean. I guess I’m actually regressing rather [...]
Swedish Tid-Bits, Två

Here’s my second installment of words I find to be interesting…see if you like them as well!
Snuskig: dirty. The word just sounds filthy. Easy to remember.
Groda: frog. I kinda think that frogs are “grody,” which makes this word perfect.
Ljus: light. Close to the Spanish word for light, which is luz. Yea for me!
Blixt: flash. Michael [...]

I’m still frustrated beyond belief with my lack of progress in Swedish. While my retention level for the vocabulary is still lacking, I am understanding and appreciating certain words and their meanings. Some of my favorites so far:
Mormor / Farmor : Mother’s mother / Father’s mother. I love that in Swedish, you instantly know whether someone [...]
